Wow, one year had come and gone before we realized it. We established 56K.Cloud one year ago December 2018. It has been one heck of a year with amazing achievements considering we started with zero revenue, customers, or projects. When I started reflecting on 2018, it was surprising how much we accomplished in our first year. 2018 in Review Started 56K.Cloud! First customer project which grew into many more We grew from 2 to 4 Julien Bisconti joined 56K Attended 8 conferences including presenting at KubeCon and 2x DockerCons Co-organized four different meetups Presented five Introduction to Docker courses 56K also contributed a lot to OSS projects we plan to increase for 2019 Open Sourced our training curriculum and examples We became AWS & Docker partners We could not be more happy with how 2018 turned out.
Journey to DockerCon 2018 Barcelona DockerCon returns to Barcelona after first appearing in the beautiful city back in 2015. A lot has transpired with Docker and the industry since we were last in Barcelona. The community continues to grow, containers have now become the standard when building Cloud Native applications, and now Kubernetes is part of almost every discussion when talking about Orchestration. The 56K.Cloud team is traveling from cold Switzerland and even colder Sweden to attend nice and warm Barcelona for DockerCon.
Photo by Rye Jessen on Unsplash TLDR: It took years but it paid off and it is thanks to the people I’ve met along the way. Starting with the Linux kernel In 2006, in order to get my degree, I had to write a thesis about MPLS networks. I was waiting for servers (racks) to arrive so I could test my code and while waiting, I was looking for a way to test locally patched Linux kernel modules.
Bootstrapping a Family Friendly Technology Company Back in January this year, Darragh and I launched our startup “56K.Cloud”. Darragh and I took time to write down our core values which were both from a company perspective and our experiences important to us and our families, as both of us, are married with kids. The risk associated with founding a company along with maintaining a manageable work-life balance meant allot to us.
A Look Back at DockerCon San Francisco Darragh and I traveled last week to DockerCon, located in beautiful San Francisco. We had great weather the entire week, an amazing conference, and made a ton of new connections. The conference was held at the Moscone convention center which was a first for both of us and an exciting place to visit considering the tech history. We had a full schedule as I was speaking at two separate sessions and a guide to DockerCon first timers for the Docker Pals track.
2018 Experts Live Switzerland Recap I had the pleasure of working with the head of Experts Live conferences Marcel Zehner when he reached out to interview me for the X-Talk video series. After we recorded the video Marcel introduced me to Experts Live Switzerland and asked if I would be interested to present Docker. But of course! Experts Live Switzerland is part of the greater Experts Live organization which hosts conferences around the world.
DevOpsDays Zürich Recap If you are part of the “no-KubeCon” attendee list don’t feel left out. Darragh grealish was able to attend with a lot of great people and presentations. Not to worry as all the KubeCon 2018 sessions will be online in no time. But for us left behind we were not slouching. Wow, what a whirlwind week. First off, it was my first time attending DevOpsDays Switzerland.
This week we are up in Ftan, Switzerland, staying and working from an amazing place hosted by Alpine Co-Working and SoCrates CH And performing docker pulls reliably at 1600 Meters :) We are here attending both a Software-Craftsmanship Un-Conference and working remote for our clients. As we believe in the value of Software-Craftmanship, sharing and reflecting on our understandings in the fast-moving tech industry as it is today.
The 56K.Cloud Launch We are happy to announce the official launch of 56K.Cloud. The Co-Founders Darragh Grealish and Brian Christner worked together on several projects ranging from Google GTUG, Akamai CDN, Swisscom Cloud, and more. Seperately, we consulted on various projects for Cloud, Containers, DevOps, and Training. We have joined forces under one umbrella and formed 56K.Cloud GmbH (LLC,LTD in Switzerland). The preparation that has gone into this launch is incredible.
